At the moment there is no support for 'parties' or 'squads', so at the moment it's random when you join a friend whether you're on the same team or not...

If you (or your friend) suicides at the right moment, it is possible to switch team. For an example, when team balances go off and there is 17 players opposed to 15 players. Player that suicides in team with 17 players, will be transferred to team with 15 players (so it's 16 vs 16 after teamswitch). It's a not the most effective method and sometimes I can't switch team for an entire round, it also forces me to constantly monitor stats/player numbers, but I've done it more than 20 times.
