Some more info could be helpful:
- what do you mean by outside source?
- Which browser do you use?
- Which Windows version do you use?

Not knowing that you could try the following:

Download and install Ccleaner from this website:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

- Close your browser
- run Ccleaner and press "Run Cleaner"
- When finished, close Ccleaner

If you run Win Vista or Win 7: Right click on the browser shortcut and choose "run as administrator".

Goto BfP4F and press "play now"

Ideally the game should now download and install properly.

OK, so I understand that you downloaded the game separately from internet and not from within the Play now function which will auto-install the game.

That is unfamiliar ground for me, but apparently it is not impossible.

Have a thorough look in the following thread and pay particular attention to what moderator Homesen gave as advice (the green posts are his, green because he is a mod).

At least 1 person confirmed his method worked.

EDIT:
Without the link this is pretty uselessTongue

I can understand that you try alternative ways if the normal way is so bugged that you end up staring at "failed to download patch file".

Also, Homesen has given advice in the past (see my link) how you could make it work, even if you have copied the game files from somewhere else.

Size of download depends on which updates you have to do.

If Homesen's approach has worked, you might face a smaller download than if you have to download the complete game, but that's not 100% reliable. With some updates, you have to download server.zip etcetera again as well, so the difference is a lot smaller in those cases.

Anyway, you can't play now, so updating is a must anyway.

EDIT: By the way, be prepared for relatively frequent updates with this game (and downloads as a consequence).

Please help me... I'm downloading BF P4F now... But it's very slow and i want to know how much file size does it has?? coz i have calculate it with my calculator... 0.9..... GB but it's still 50 %. I've read the thread about this one, and it says that it has 1.3 GB but if 1,3 GB is 100 % complete why 0.9 GB just 50 % complete? please help me and can u tell me how long does it take to download this.. OK,
I can't find a definitively working solution but using the search function I found a few more options that might work:

Since you state that you use Win7 and IE, is that the 64-bits version of IE? If yes, this one might work:

(15-12-2010 06:44 PM)isio_KB Wrote:  xSoldier_PT try to use normal internet explorer not 64bit version, i've got Win 7 and on firefox new beta, and internet explorer 64 bit i've got the same problem like you i try on normal and its workWink
goo luck man;] and sorryy for my english;D

Have you tried using another browser by the way??
IE seems to give the most problems with patch file.
Try using Firefox or Chrome. It should find the BfPf4 game folder that you linked in your registry.

Another option:

(17-03-2011 08:14 PM)Eisscratch Wrote:
(17-03-2011 07:27 PM)Eisscratch Wrote:  Uninstall the add-on
Right Click your browser icon and select run as administrator and try again.
Good luck.Wink
That should help. If not, look, whether you have .NetFramework 3.5 installed.Wink
Good luck.Wink

You might have already tried this (since you said you tried the BFH thing), but maybe not, this one is about general disc writing rights in Windows7 NTFS filesystem (always a potential problem):
