The oft misunderstood Recon class is the one class in Battlefield Play4Free which has two clear and distinct combat roles on the battlefield, and it just so happens that they are polar opposites, with each one being at either end of the spectrum.

While both entail plenty of sharp eyed surveillance, one combat role’s stereotype sees the Recon Soldier sitting at the back of the battlefield picking off any opposition troops that may have the misfortune of crossing his line of sight, while the other sees him flanking up and around enemy positions, scouting enemy targets and harrying opposition positions they previously believed to be safe. Of course, these are only stereotypes and the class can be played in any number of ways should one set their mind to it.

The art of espionage

Regardless of which combat role you choose to pursue, one of the Recon Soldier’s primary goals is to spot opposition troops in order to make his team aware of their position. To that end, the Recon Soldiers training provides him with a few tricks he generally keeps well hidden. Of most importance, the Recon class has the unique ability to uncover and mark up to 6 enemy soldiers in a fraction of the time it takes any other class to do the same using his Advanced Reconnaissance ability. With this done, he can engage them immediately or wait for backup from the rest of his team and engage the opposition when it is safe to do so, reaping the rewards of multiple spot assist points in addition to those he gets for injuring and killing enemy troops.

If that wasn’t enough in the way of territory surveillance, a Recon Soldier can also place a motion sensor which relays the position of any enemy troops within its radius to everyone on the Recon Soldier’s team, wherever he chooses, allowing him to either place precise coverage on hotbeds of opposition activity, or cover off a path that would provide the opposition with a flanking opportunity. Knowledge is power, and the Recon class is the one most adept at keeping both himself and his team fully abreast of current enemy positions.

Claymores: "Front Toward Enemy"

Claymores are anti-personal mines that can be used to great effect when both sniping from afar and getting up close and personal with opposition forces. If placed correctly claymores can provide protection from certain avenues of attack for the Recon Soldier that prefers to sit back and air out the heads of opposition troops trying to kill his teammates.

For the Recon Soldier that prefers the up close and personal avenue of attack, claymores are great toys to place in unsuspecting corners, areas where most troops generally feel safe while they’re making their way to the frontline. This tactic is particularly useful as not only does it take opposition troops out of the action before they have even had a chance to target your allies, but it also has a psychological effect on them too. Once killed in an area previously thought to be safe, the opposition will be checking each and every corner gingerly when navigating the map, slowing down their frontline reinforcements, thereby making it easier for your team to overrun their thinning defenses and push forward!

The future and what’s in store
With the introduction of Tier 3 Training, each of the two diverse play styles will receive even more emphasis and be more clearly defined. Lets take a brief look at some of the new abilities the third tier of training will unlock for the Recon Soldier.
  • Mortar Strike: Receiving top billing, this highly anticipated ability will allow the Recon to reach out and touch a person, place or thing with much more destructive power than ever before! Once a target has been spotted, the Recon Soldier can rain down death from above without ever leaving the ground in the form of a devastating mortar strike that can leave even armour heavily damaged or destroyed!

But the Mortar Strike is not only important due to it's damage output, it's also a key deterrent in preventing enemy armour from camping from affair and laying down an uncontested barrage of shells on your positions from a safe distance. It can also be used to control where opposition forces move by raining down pain on anyone who dares to travel through an area the Recon Soldier doesn't particularly want them to have access to.
  • Combat Infiltration: Combat Infiltration has managed to sneak into the Tier 3 Training tree without attracting too much attention; but don't let that fool you, this ability is just as important and as Mortar Strike. Once trained in Combat Infiltration, a Soldier will have the knowledge and knowhow to avoid being spotted and reported to the rest of the opposition team via their mini map. This ability is a perfect compliment to any Recon Soldiers choosing to go the up close and personal route, giving them a better chance of being able to scout behind enemy lines. Is that the sound of a knife unsheathing I hear?
  • Identify Target: This ability could literally be the difference between life and death for a Recon Soldier. Should he choose to use it, he will be able to see an indicator detailing the class of the opposition soldier he his currently targeting. With this in mind, and depending on the weapon loadout that he is using, the he can easily spot the Medic in a crowd of soldiers and take him out before he gets the chance to drop medpacks, thereby making the annihilation of the rest of the soldiers in the group quite a bit easier.

That’s not all, there’s more on the way, but you’ll have to wait to see what else we’ve got planned! Check back tomorrow when we’ll highlight another class and see what’s in store for them once Tier 3 training finally shows it's face!

When your a Recon expect low kills and a few deaths because they are meant for help and are usually spotted if you use the usual camping spots but i still really like them!

Is it means that some levels will be added? because only 19/20 skill points is a very low amuont regarding all the possiblities to spend them.
