If I first read about BF Play 4 Free, I thought: "Could it be that there is a part in the BF Game-History which is really for free?... and... would it be worth playing?"... Until now I knew the Parts of BF only as Games which are not free of charge and so I was very surprised as I read about this.
And I have to say... Go on.. Take it forward.. and well done so far.
Nice

Really enjoying game so far, really miss BF2, but this will do til BF3 comes out (make it more like BF2, less like BFBC).
Thing I really want to see is brightness/gamma adjuster in options. Maps are very dark and it's not gonna do my eyes any good squinting at the screen!
Don't really get it? I mean I've got all the other games to still play but I guess it's a nice addition and change of pace.

It's really good. Its good to see what looks to be the BF:BC what jets and it works
Played for 5 mins, this is total crap. Should close it down asap and focus on battlefield 3.
id love to give my first impressions but i cant because im on a mac and they dont have any mac support so i cant play the freaking game
IMO This is a nice side note to a great series of games, but their are issues. In the launcher my mouse doesn't sync so I have to place my cursor above and left of anything I want to select. Also I can't play for more than one round because the ready button has to be clicked with the mouse, (see above issue) if there were a way to highlight the ready button I'd be able to play more than one round at a time without exiting and rebooting the launcher.

You can just press enter. That doesn't fix the problem where the game may still crash though (or the "Ready" button just not work)

. You can use tab and enter to navigate the setup menu, albeit not very well.
I've played Battlefield Play4Free for several hours now, and I have carefully constructed a laundry list of complaints, along with a few smart additions made to the game. Please note that even though it looks like I'm blasting the game, please understand that I really do like this game. I also understand that this game is still in beta, so there's bound to be some issues with it. It has been getting more playtime lately than Team Fortress 2 and the laughably mediocre game that I stupidly paid money for known as Homefront, so I think that speaks for itself.
Things that bug me-
The skill tree is just ridiculous. Why do you have to get to level 4 just to use grenades?.
Seriously, every basic skill needs to unlocked in BF Free 2 Play. Stupid skill like flying
heli's and jets, and most stupidly of all using the coaxial on the heavy tanks. Was that really necessary EA? I know you're trying to put some longevity into the game, but it just makes the game tedious. Why didn't you lock out the sprint function? That would have made just as much sense.
The damage indicator is waaaay too subtle. Half the time I'm down to barely any health and I don't
realize it. It would be nice if there was a better indication that you were just about to die! Some more visual queues would be much appreciated.
Why do medics get an MG3? It makes no damn sense! Why would you want your medic
weighed down by a 50 lb gun? It's hard to heal anybody when you're lugging an M249 SAW around.
I know they did the same stupid thing in Bad Company 2, but this really needs to change. It would have been really nice if they just kept the same classes from BF 2, but for some reason everything needs to be needlessly stream lined
nowadays.
The assault class is extremely overpowered. And I do mean EXTREMELY OVERPOWERED! I think the assault class really needs to be renamed Sniper, because they sure do excel at killing someone
from over 300 yards away. Their accuracy need to be seriously tweaked, because it's incredibly
unfair.
Not only did they resort to using BF 2142's idiot skill tree system that locks out necessities
like the defibrillator and grenades, they also had to use the stupid system from BF Heroes, where when you create a character, they're stuck with whatever class you initially chose. This is incredibly annoying for several reasons. First off, it means that in order to change class, you have to exit the damn map, and then go back to the menu and choose a different character. It also means that you can't adapt to a situation, like when there's an part of the human anatomy tank graping your base. I can kind of see what they were going for here, but it really breaks the game. Oh, and you only get two solider slots, so if you make an engineer and a sniper, guess what? You can't play as an assault or medic until you buy another slot. You can't even delete your soldiers, so it forces you to shell out money to try every class. Ugh...
The medics really blow ass in this game. I've already addressed the fact that they have to use an incredibly inappropriate primary weapon, but they also had to go and screw up the health bag. In BF2, when you selected the health bag, you held it in your hands or throw it down, but now every time you select it, you just throw it down. What sense does that make? Apparently medics run around with an infinite supply of med-bags that are so convenient to use that they just have to throw them at whim. This really needs to be fixed.
You need to unlock the ability to tell where you're taking damage from. What sense does that make?
Are you honestly trying to tell me that our soldiers need to be trained in something that just comes
naturally to any living being? Do they have that nerve disease that the villain from The World is Not Enough has?
The spawning system is all screwed up. For some reason the game will just randomly plop you wherever the hell it feels like. Remember when you used to be able to choose your spawn point? Well they thought that was just too cumbersome so now you have no choice where to spawn. You can choose to spawn at the home base, but good luck with that since the game currently lags like a mother whenever you die, and it only gives you like three seconds to make up your mind. The absolute worst is when you're playing as a sniper and the game decides that it's gonna parachute you behind enemy lines.
I don't know if this is a skill that somebody calls in, but man is this extremely annoying.
Trying to heal or get ammo is ridiculous. It was nice in BF 2 how the support class could supply ammo in the field, and your medics could provide health. In addition to that, at most bases there was always an ammo crate and a health locker. Why did you feel the need to remove these? Half the time I'll be running around kicking ass, when all of a sudden I'm out of ammo. It's especially annoying as an engineer because you go through your resources really quickly. Even when you do find an ammo
bag, but only when the stars perfectly align, there seems to be some horrible delay in actually getting your ammo or other items. It's bad enough that you have to select the weapon that you want to reload, but it just takes forever to get fully resupplied again, and then usually the stupid ammo bag just disappears. I suppose you're trying to enforce the idea of teamwork, but no one really wants to lend you a hand most of the time. This is partly due to the fact that when you call out for a medic or ammo, you can barely see it on the map. Your little blue arrow flashes yellow, but that really isn't very helpful. The bottom line is, you really need to put in fixed health and ammo boxes at some of the bases.
Sniping is practically worthless in this game because every gun in the game has roughly the same effective range. So if you're trying to snipe an assault class, it practically guaranteed that he will do more damage to you then you will to him. I just really don't get this one. I know all guns have a degree of bullet drop, but why does the assault class make better snipers then the actual snipers? The
amount of damage that you deal is also ridiculous. An assault can do about 20-40 damage per hit and can get around 3 hits per second, and snipers do roughly 40-60 per hit with a rate of fire of about 1 shot per second. So basically, even if you land one clean shot on an assault, he's probably gonna kill you unless he's a horrible shot.
The additions I liked-
I really do like how whenever you aim at a friendly, a little blue x appears over your cross hair. This was a good addition because one of the biggest problems I had with Bad Company was that I couldn't tell the difference between my team mates and enemies. It even applies to friendly vehicles. Overall, a very smart design choice.
The damage indicator is also really nice. Not only can you tell if you're hitting an enemy or not, but it also gives you the number of damage points that it dealt.
It is nice that you can buy healing items like bandages and questionable syringes with credits. It's very useful when you're trying to lay low for a while, and you sustain a a bunch of injuries that you can actually heal yourself if need be. It's a nice alternative to the stupid regenerating health nonsense that every other shooter just has to use nowadays.
It may seem like I really hate this game, which sometimes I do, but I honestly do like this game. I've been a huge Battlefield fan for several years now, and to see a return to form after several disappointing games *cough* Bad Company 2 *cough* is really refreshing. I eagerly await the game's official release.
Just joined today, racked up some hours already. Overall I find some bits I like, and some I don't.
Cons:
- Unnecessary lock-in to my browser, why? Neither game nor updater actually uses my browser.
- No way to adjust resolution when running windowed mode, very bad for a casual game.
- I don't mind the dated graphics, but the jerky animations really put me off somehow.
- Lot of atrocious lag, makes the BFBC2 beta feel like smooth sailing. Is everyone too busy downloading customizations?
- After having a look at the store the game seems to be exceptionally expensive if you don't want to be stuck with the default layout, especially given the quality of the game/content. If prices were 1/10th it would be more reasonable.
- Medics with LMGs...
Pro:
- Maps are nice so far.
- Nice feel when playing, feels like a battlefield.
- Lower end graphics means a lot more of my friends can potentially play it.
Generally the game seems to be off to a good start. On the technical side of things it was a pleasant surprise to see that my old rig was able to maintain a playable framerate even on high settings and full screen. Keep it that way. It was also nice to find that internet lag was minimal. I don't know what criteria are being used to find 'suitable' games in the matchmaker, but as you can probably guess there will inevitably be situations where a server browser with filtering options will be mandatory. Be ready to cross that bridge when we come to it.
In terms of gameplay I've only tried recon so far, but in the last four and a half hours of fooling around I think I've gotten a pretty good understanding of things. I can't say that I've run into any particular problems, but there are a few features from BC2 that I already miss. I can understand the need for both horizontal and vertical sway with sniper scopes, but it is irritating that after firing a shot it becomes very hard to track the tracer to see where I've actually placed it. I'll get the usual 50 or so points and honestly not know if I've hit the shoulder, waist, or foot. Some tweak to make the tracer easier to follow would be much appreciated.
Also, for whatever reason the binding to scroll through inventory in-game doesn't seem to work well with the mouse wheel. I double-checked the binding and it still doesn't change weapons. Another look at that perhaps? Not a big deal since you can use inventory keys just fine, but still this shouldn't be ignored.
As of the skill and purchase system, the only things that seem problematic is that the 'battle funds' are necessary to get anything for keeps. Can't there be some way to trade the usual credits for BF points? Maybe the exchange rate can be absolutely exorbitant, but there shouldn't be any reason to make real payment completely mandatory.
As a final thought, I thing I want to see most is more content, period. More guns, more customizations, more skills, more gadgets, more maps, etc. I know this is a beta and all, but every item that doesn't get tested before launch is a potential snafu waiting to happen. Remember BC2's pre-patch M60?
1- Battlefunds on Betas??
2- That "Battlefield" feeling is back!
3- My cardboard box can run it

Okay, let me preface this by saying that I've been playing Battlefield games since they came out. I played 1942 and all the expansions in LAN parlors. The whole shebang.
Now let me say that this is a horrible game so far. I don't mean to sound incredibly negative, and I know it's in beta, but forgive me for looking at all the publicity EA puts out and not think "Hey, they're remaking BF2 and hopefully they won't screw it up this time?"
I absolutely LOVED BF2. Played it extensively, from when it first came out. That game made me buy a joystick I loved it so much. I miss it greatly because I have yet to find a game that was that amount of awesome. Bad Company games are nice, but they have a smaller scope of feel to them.
Okay, time to get to the point: Here are my main issues with this game, and my ideas for resolving them.
1. First and foremost, your prices for guns. You'd think that DICE/EA would learn from their mistakes with Battlefield Heroes. I had a large group of friends playing that game. That is, until they dropped the 'rental' times for guns bought with VP and increased the prices. They made it almost impossible to play that game without spending some form of money.
Sure. You can stick with the default weapons, and when someone runs across your path after they've spent $50 on random weapons and gear and own you so hard your parents felt it, you'll feel differently. 3 day rentals do not a good product make.
Solution? Easy, go back to at least a half-way marker for what you had them at. Keep the prices, but make it week-long rentals. That way it still pays to ... well, pay.
2. Make some of the controls able to be toggle and non-toggle. Who the HELL thought aiming down the sights should be a toggle? God that's a horrible idea. Every game in existence has it set to either an option for both, or you hold it down to go into sights. Same goes for crouch. BF:BC2 has a crouch as a toggle feature, and I like it. Makes it so your pinky doesn't go AWOL on you.
3. If you're crouching (preferable prone, and I'd love to see this come back. Oh where did you go Z key?) your scope should sway MUCH less. It feels when I'm playing recon that I have fits of epilepsy. It's almost impossible to get headshots when your scope sways as if you are nervous about your date tomorrow.
Easy fix: Make it sway less. To be honest, the swaying feature in Bad Company 2 is PERFECT. It sways just enough to make long-range shots difficult, but not impossible when crouched.
Also, bring back prone!
4. Make it so you can pick classes on the fly. I understand why BFH had it set like that, but in a game like this where classes make the match or break it, it limits a team severely when half their team is Recon or Engineers. To be honest, this game should feel like an evolution on Battlefield 2, not it's redneck inbred cousin.
5. Some options should not immediately swing/fire/throw when selecting them. I dislike hitting 4 and my character immediately throws a Motion Sensor. Set this to an option toggle-able ability.
6. Now I get why Aircraft/Helos/Maybe Tanks need training, but GRENADES? Seriously? What do I do with it? Wear it as a hat? C'mon. This should be a givin'. I think 1 grenade in Bad Company is bad, but this makes that shine. Should not be an ability you should waste points on, every soldier is issued grenades in combat, why not us?
Those are most of my MAIN concerns, some smaller ones are as follows:
(X) I think sprinting speed seems a bit low, I may be wrong, but I remember running faster in almost every BF game.
(X) Make the Q button a little more efficient. Should be something similar to BF:BC2 and BF2. If you just tap it, it auto-spots whatever is in your crosshair range at about a 15º radius. If you hold it down, you can ask for other options. Simple.
(X) Knife should probably be able to be bounded to something other than a # key, without using up the slot. But this is not such a big deal.
(X) Recons need ghilie suits.
(X) Amount of reserve ammo for sidearm is incredibly low, only one extra clip? I'm ex-military and I don't know of anyone who would carry just that. Maybe 1 more clip?
(X) When I die, those little check-boxes I believe are where I can spawn, however because it keeps 'loading customizations' I cannot click on ANYTHING until I spawn. Please fix?
I think that's about it. I really, really want to like this came considering I played BF2 since it came out (I think my total amount of hours amounted to around 300 -500 hours.) and as it stands (Yes, I know it's Beta) I can't play this game. I'd rather play something where the combat feels fluid and not toy-like.
Thanks!

a.k.a Jewbat (Name I've used for quite some time and no I am not racist. Thanks.)
P.S. I really do hope someone reads these and something comes of it. I've been part of too many betas where they only took a sample of the messages and ignored the rest.
Edit: I just found out that you can't recycle or undo your 'Training' points? Are you serious? I got to level 10 or so and recycled thinking "Well I'll put them and the ones I got into such-and-such skill" and find my points are just gone? This needs to be fixed ASAP. I can't play a game that doesn't even let you know your points will be gone if you push this button.
I'd have to say that until you offer gamepad, controller, XBOX 360 controller, support I'll be steering clear of this game. Free or not.Yes I want to play it with a controller. No I do not want to play it with a mouse and Keyboard. That should be a gamers choice. Not one set rule. Until that happens, count me out. It's totally confusing to me because I could play Battlefield 1943 with a controller. Oh well, your loss.

Look for a program called "Joy2Key." Wonderful little application that can adapt a gamepad to a game.
Also, for 360 controllers. Go to Microsoft Window's website, look for the driver. It will allow you to use a 360 controller in anything.
Still experiencing mouse aim issues. I'm not a normal PC gamer and the problem might be on my end, but can barely make it through the menu. When I do lag is terrible.
This is my first time ever doing the "beta" thing so i'm not sure if this is just the super rough cut edition. But so far I'm kinda bummed. The graphics seem like they are more in line with the original Battlefield1942. I was kinda expecting sweeter graphics then BFBC2 had. And I'm not so sure about having to buy stuff. Isnt it enough that I spend $60 on the game itself? Just my thoughts.
The game is free though you dont have to pay 60 bucks for it , you just have option to buy an Over powered weapon if you want to have an advantage over other players.

(sorry, quotes didnt work for me for some reason)
THANK YOU! THIS IS EXACTLY MY POINT! (well some of it anyway)
This really, really bugs me about this game. And it is the most annoying of all. We should get all 4 soldiers for free! simple as that! Note the name of the game here please: "Battlefield Play 4 Free"
NOW LETS STICK TO WHAT THE NAME SAYS!
I would like to have it "Battlefield Play 4 Free and enjoy playing while your at it, FOR FREE!"
not:
"Battlefield Play 4 Free (some of its free anyways)"
