![]() Under OPTIONS you will find a tab called: AIRCRAFT. Here you will find "Plane Controls". Although i would suggest a joystick, some people pilot a jet with keyboard and mouse or keyboard only quite well. So if you don´t have a joystick yet, start practising with those settings. A joystick is a must have for every die hard Battlefield P4F pilot. Makes piloting jets a lot easier. Joysticks are better than mouse/keyboard or just a keyboard. Think of it this way, you have more control in a joystick than in a mouse because movements are consistent and do not require retracking the mouse at the edge. Keyboards, do not allow for minimizing movements, you can't decrease your speed to half and hold it. ![]() 1.3 One Button Spotting You can add a spot button to your joystick so you can easily spot enemies while flying. It is also very usefull when you are following an enemy jet and lose him. If you spotted him earlier, you will find him back on the minimap. Do the following things to create a button for spotting on your joystick:
(It might be that the 2 lines that you need to remove are on a different place, so not below eachother. Then simply delete both lines and insert the code at the place of the last line that you removed.) Thanks to Rukqoa, he helped a little. He also has a guide about One Button Spotting which can be found here: Battlefield Play4Free / Community Discussion / General discussion / [Guide] One Button Spotting 1.4 JoyToKey ![]() The original author's website no longer exists, at least not in English anyway. So here is the most recent English support mirror I can find: Joytokey Website Here are the configuration files, that i use for my Logitech 3D Pro. If someone has configs for other joysticks, please let me know. I´ll add them here. Joytokey V3.7.9 + config for Logitech 3D Pro Leave this program running while playing the game! You can minimize it to system tray. Problems with installing this tool for the Logitech 3D Pro? Head over to this thread: http://battlefield.play4free.com/en/foru...?tid=48761 1.5 Calibration

![]() Let´s start with the basic information that you see on your interface when you find yourself in a jet. I´ll here explain short what everyting means and tell the most important things you need to know about your HUD. More will be explained later in this guide. 2.1 Basic HUD info ![]() Airspeed (4) will make the jet moving forward. Speed aslo determines you ability to maneuver the aircraft, without speed you simply could not fly. Altitude (6) is the height on which your jet is. You will need atleast 300 speed to take off and get in the air. To land safely you should have around 300-350 speed at the start (or end, just how you look at it) of the airstrip. The higher you are, the more speed you will have. This because the jet will have less influence of gravitation. Although when you climb your speed will decrease a little and when you dive it will increase. 800 is the maximum altitude you should go, above 900 your jet will be out of control. Here some stats for when you fly horizontal.
The pitch ladder (1) displays the aircraft's pitch relating to the grounds level/horizontal in degree. It's used as an artificial horizon. If the horizon line (5) is under 0° on the pitch ladder, the aircraft is pitching up. If the horizon line is above 0° on the pitch ladder, the aircraft is pitching down. The compass (2) aligns itself along the magnetic field that surrounds the earth. The machinegun crosshair (3) shows you where your MG bullets will hit. Same as the crosshair of any other regular gun. Their might be a little bulletdrop, but you will only notice that on long distances. More info about this can be found here: Battlefield Play4Free / Community Discussion / Tutorials, Guides and Strategies / Rukqoa's Ballistics Guide The following infomation has everyting to do with your own plane. Like how much life your plane has, what weapons & countermeasures are available and how many ammo. Armor status (7) shows the amount of health that your jet has left. You can repair your jet on the airstrip of your mainbase by flying over it. Around 20 health per second will be regenerated. So you might fly over a couple times or land to recover full health again. Weapons (8) shows the weapons & flares that you can use while in a plane. The available abilities are 1. HSM (Heat Seeking Missiles) 2. Bombs 3. MG (Machine Gun) 4. Flares Ammunition (10) shows the amount of ammo that you can use for each weapon. The first number indicates the amount of available missiles/bombs and the second the amount of MG bullets. There are 2 different modes Bomb mode & Missile mode. With those 2 modes you will be able to kill every enemy unit in the game. Bomb mode is for ground targets and Missile mode for every unit that flies. Bomb Mode When in bomb mode your HUD can help you to locate and target enemy ground units. Enemy vehicles or AA turrets will recieve a mark when you get closer to them. The bottom of the "T" in the middle of your HUD tells you where your bombs will land when released. Also known as "bombing reticule (9)". Missile Mode In missile mode your HUD can help you to locate and target enemy air units. Enemy targets will recieve a mark when they are in your sight. To get a lock on them, you need to keep the marked target in the middle of the HUD. Also known as detection area (11). 2.2 Warnings & other important messages/symbols Sometimes there might pop up warning symbol to inform you that you are in sight of an enemy that is able to hit you with an HSM or a message that tells your what is happening on the map at that moment. Always be alert and use them in your advantage. ![]()
2.3 Orientation & Coordination Where am i now and where should i go? The answer to this question can be found on your map. Aswell some other interesting things can be spotted on the map. The most important thing is that you always know where you are and the map can greatly help you with that. Once you face the sky or get above the mist/clouds you will only know where you are if you use the map. ![]() Here some things that you can spot on your map.

![]() Knowing and understanding the differences between jets is crucial in Battlefield P4F, like as it was in BF2. It makes the diffence between being a rookie or a ace pilot. Although, thanks to a better MG and less HSM´s (2) in BFP4F the jets has become more equal to eachother in dogfights (With HSM fights it´s more about missile dodging). Some jets still have a better maneuverability, speed or reaction time. So there will always be a side with a better jet. Once you know what the (dis)advantages are from all jets, you will be able to maximize your piloting skills. For as far i´ve noticed the maneuverability, speed or reaction time are still the same as in BF2. But now avoiding the bullets from your opponents MG is more important then avoiding HSM´s. Which increases your chances to surive, if you do well. Because it´s now more depending on your evasion moves then each jets missile dodging capabilities. Here some stats to get an idea: Available jets: ![]() ![]() |

![]() Let´s talk about tactics. During your flight you will find yourself in all kind of situations. For each situation there is a way to hold control and stay in the fight. 5.1 Attack priorities for fighter jets
5.2 Fighter jet vs. Fighter jet This will be the most interesting part for most of you, so i´ll explain everything as clearly as possible. Note: An important thing to start with is that the jets in BFP4F are quite equal to eachother. Or atleast that´s what they are in closed beta(this might change). Either way, if you find yourself in a F35 or a MIG-29, you will have a pretty fair chance against your opponent, without thinking to much about all the advantages and disadvantages of your own and of the other jet. The primary weapon of the jets is the MG(simulair to BFH) when talking about dogfights (jet vs. jet). And HSM´s are the secondary weapon. Which means that you should learn how to kill an enemy jet with your MG and only use HSM´s to finish your attack or when you run out of MG ammo. To hit an enemy jet, you need to aim your crosshair in front of the enemy jet. Your bullets need to travel some distance first before they reach the other jet. So the farther the enemy jet is, the farther your bullets need to travel before they cross his flypath. Then you might need to aim a bit higher or to whatever direction is needed. After some practising you will be able to know where you should aim to hit your opponent. It looks harder then it is. The image below shows an indication of where you should aim at. ![]() When following an enemy jet always stay in bomb mode, this will offer you the oppertunity to sneak up close without being noticed by the opponent. Ofcourse he might be a experienced pilot that uses his face camera view, but he will not hear the BEEP and see the HSM warning indicator symbol. This also shows you ground targets while flying. More important things to mention:
Jet vs. Jet (Dogfight) video´s: 5.3 Fighter jet vs. Helicopter If there would be anything that would give you a lot kills at once, then that would be a helicopter. Especialy the transport helicopters that can carry up to 7 players. Attack helicopters will mostly have 2 players on them. The way to attack helicopters is simulair to how you shoot down a jet. You will mainly use your MG. More important things to mention:
Jet vs Helicopter video´s: 5.4 Fighter jet vs. Bomber jet Not available yet 5.5 Fighter jet and Bombing Bombing is the most effective weapon of your jet against ground vehicles. It does a lot damage at once and will propably be worth 1/2 of your kills and points when piloting a jet. It can kill the tank that prevents your team from taking a flag with ease. Instead of dropping your bombs on the first random target you can find. You need to prioritize what target would be the most important to destroy. Often you will be presented with a plethora of targets and you have to choose which one to go for. The attack priorities for fighter jets mentioned at 5.1 can help you with that. How to bomb As you might have seen earlier in this guide, there is a special HUD to bomb. The "T" in the HUD is also called the bombing reticule. It helps you to aim on where the bombs should land. But don´t get fooled by it, it´s just a indication. You are better off focusing on where the bombs are going and leading your target then just pointing the reticule at things and hoping for explosions. The best way to learn bombing is simply to try it out and use the face camera view, so you can see where they land. When you bomb you need to consider these factors:
I´ll expalin those short. Height obviously influences your angle, velocity and what exit strategy you have available. Height is the most important as the lower you are, the less distance the bombs will have to travel making it far easier to time the release. If you release your bombs to high, your target will have time to move out the area, while the bombs fall down. So you need to estimate on which height you release your bombs to hit the target on the ground. With that in mind, you want to start high, drop to a mid-level, release your bombs on the down stroke, and continue back to a higher altitude. Angle of approach ( 1 ), is an important thing when bombing. Because it will determine the direction of the bombs after you release them. In the image below i´ll show you where your bombs will land on which angle.
Velocity ( 2 )
![]() Exit Strategy - First you need to make sure that the path you take is clear from obstacles like trees, buildings, powerlines, etc. Then you need to fly back up to a decent altitude so you can once again be offensive or defensive. If you get in range of an active AA after a bombing run, you need to exit fast. Here you have 2 choices.
Bombing video´s
5.6 Fighter jet and MG Strafing Your MG is very effective and costs you little in ammunition, so you should spray all common spawn points, jeeps, APCs, AA sites, tanks and even infantry. Together with the Improved Thread Awareness ability you can suprise hidden enemy infantry troops. ![]() MG Strafing video´s 5.7 Bomber jet vs. Helicopter Not available yet 5.8 Bomber jet and Bombing Not available yet 5.9 Bomber jet and MG Strafing Not available yet 5.10 Evasion tactics (Jet) Since you are nr.1 priority for enemy jets, they will keep an eye on sky to spot you. And hunt you down if they are able to. So it´s very important to know what to do incase they get on your tail. I´ll explain most common tactics that can help you to escape and take revange. ![]() ![]() Split-S video´s: ![]() Immelmann video´s: Double Immelmann video: ![]() Scissor video: Barrel roll You make a full 360° roll. More info can be found here: Barrel Roll - Wikipedia Barrel Roll video: High altitude escape If you practise a little, then you can also escape by going above 800 ft. Make sure that your nose points straight into the air. Cut your throttle completely (Mig - 29) and wait untill you fall back to 700ft. Then reapply throttle and establish horizon. Keep in mind that the F35 will start spinning when you reverse throttle at this altitude. You can prevent this by keeping your throttle at 0 (in the middle or when using a keyboard not pressing S/decelerate). High altitude escape video´s: Going out of bounds This is a sneaky tactic. You let the attacker, who is following you flying out of bounds (and you will see him getting a suicide) while you fly fast & safely back to the middle of the map. Your mainbase (airfield/carrier) is also protected by a no fly zone (bound) for the enemy. If your attacker stays beyond the bounds or in the no fly zone longer than 8 seconds, he will die. 5.11 Evasion tactics (AA) Your worst enemy will mostly be the IGLA´s and Stingers. Especialy when there are more than one trying to shoot you down. AA´s can lock you in a range of 375 yards and each missile that hits can do around 400 damage! At a altitude of 375 yards you should be safe for most of the AA´s. Keep in mind that the AA on D is at a roof, around 15/20 yard above sea level. If you got locked by an AA, you have 2 options:
Outmaneuvering AA missiles (For experienced pilots) If you know which AA is trying to get you down, you can move into the right position to outmaneuver the AA missiles, this works best from higher altitudes. You simply turn back into the direction of the AA after the missiles are fired. So when they are still flying upwards, you make a sharp turn back to earth into the direction of the AA. The missiles will try to follow you in the turn but since they don´t have the same turn radius they will loose you out of sight. Outmaneuvering AA missiles video: Jet Tactics - Outmaneuvering AA missiles First you need to know where they are located. Below you can find a map with their positions. Stationary AA locations: ![]() Secondly you need to find out which AA´s are in use by the enemy. There are a couple ways to find out. ![]()
5.12 Flares Once you hear the missile alert tone (BEEEEEPPPP), a HSM is on his way to your jet. Flares can help you to escape, if you use them well! The best technique to avoid being hit is to create an upwards Flare Bouquet. Flare Bouquet ![]()
Flare video´s: 5.13 Attack tactics You will need to use attack tactics when the enemy is aware of your presense behind him or her and starts to use evasion tactics. Below here you can find the most common attack maneuvers. Yoyo Lagroll Cuban 8
The Snake Bite One of my favorite activities while piloting a jet is bombing. It´s always fun to drop a bomb somewhere the enemy thinks he is safe. Like on the top of the crane, under a roof or while he is hiding behind a fence/wall. This does require some piloting skills, but with some practise it will go better and better. After a while i realized that the ability Improved Thread Awareness also works in jets if you approuch your target from above. This helps alot and made bombing a lot more fun. With the F35 i was now able to pick any target at a large distance. So no problems with the F35 HUD bug(only showing vehicles at short distance). And even infantry had become a very easy target this way. So i started making loops above my targets. On the first run down i used my MG and dropped my bombs, on the second i only used my MG, since my bombs were still reloading. Then i tried something i haven´t seen anyone doing before. Using AAM´s (Air to Air Missiles) against ground units. Together with the bomb tactic mentioned above, it has become one of the most aggressive and hated tactics i use. I call it the snake bite, because the movement looks like a snake bite as you can see at the maneuver discription below. ![]() Snake Bite video´s:
5.14 Usage of different views You have a couple different views available: rear view, 3th person view and cockpit view. With mouse look you can look almost everywhere around your plane. Use this in your advantage! Below you see some examples. Also keep in mind that at higher altitudes you have a better overview across the map. And might spot approaching opponents earlier. ![]() Different camera views video: Check out GoblinRazor´s Battlefield Play4Free - Jet Gameplay for a proper demonstration. |

![]() 6.1 Tips - Fly in bomb mode, behind an enemy jet so that you don't give the enemy any indication of your presence. Just remember that sneaking up on target is way more effective than flashing a red light in their face. - Do not hover in the F35 over flags or anywhere else. You will be an easy catch. - Memorize AA gun sites. - Dont fire missiles in a tight turned dogfight, its guaranteed to fail. - Full map view is the best zooming level for the minimap. - When bombing, remember the lower you are the less distance the bombs will have to tavel which makes it alot easier to time the release. However, dont get too low, remember the bombs are very powerful and the blast can seriously damage your plane if you fly to low over the blast area. ... 6.2 Other interesting BFP4F Jet related guides: Missile Evasion Guide (by DrDred-E) How to use the AA Launcher (by Pvt.Parts) [Guide]A tutorial about aircraft training [Version 0.3] (by [FR]Scompe) ... 6.3 Must-have-seen movies This collection of video´s will provide you an impression of what happens during all kind of jet fights. I´ve been jet whoring for a long time in most Battlefield series and simply can´t wait to see them here. So when i knew that we would be able to fly in BFP4F, i started looking if i could find more info about it. Like what jets would become available and other stuff. I guess there are more jet lovers out there so i made a guide with a little preview about what we can expect. And ofcourse i will add any new information once we get the oppertunity to takeoff.
